Carocci, Roma, 2018.

In breve:

Abstract:

This book explores - from an interdisciplinary perspective - the different aspects of rapraesentatio maiestatis in European theatre and opera from the 17th to the 19th-century, as well as the representation of political regime change. Taking the pivotal question of the staging of power dynamics as a starting point, this study takes a close look at the evolution of representations of power, from the celebration of the monarchy to the exaltation of the French Revolution, all the way up to patriotic Risorgimento ideologies. At the end of the eighteenth century, the dramaturgical activity of the Baroque and early eighteenth centuries was transformed from an agent of monarchical splendour to a moralistic criticism of those in power and finally into a vehicle of Risorgimento propaganda. Le voci arcane delves into this development in the history of the performative texts and offers keys to understanding how and to what extent theatre and music drama contributed to the definition of the idea of nationhood in an anti-absolutist and unitarist sense.
